Challenging agroecology through the characterization of farming practices’ diversity in Mediterranean irrigated areas

چکیده

Identifying locally adapted and adopted efficient practices can be a step towards the agroecological transition of irrigated plains Southern Mediterranean region. However, these types - often little known are drowned within wide range practices. The objective this study was, first, to elaborate method describe diversity in semi-arid landscape, at both plot farm scales; second, show main characteristics crop management; third, question their sustainability according principles. To do so, paper focused on cropping systems as i) studies management routes scarce with regard region; ii) landscapes for high level natural, technical financial constraints, favoring more intensive farming regarding chemical inputs. A series semi-directive interviews were conducted order assess farmers’ chili-pepper-based (Capsicum annuum) systems, widespread Merguellil plain, Central Tunisia. "Typ-iti” method, combining multivariate analysis, clustering association rules, was used characterize (TMR) systems. environmental qualitatively accessed by classifying clusters TMRs obtained potential impact natural resources. Then, associated some structural characteristics, analyze level. These enabled distinguish gradient respectively scales relative impacts. showed that agroecology-compatible coexisted conventional Our characterized three groups: group input powered especially tenant farmers, an intermediary iii) moderate land owners. Throughout groups, seven described. always comprised agroecology non-agroecology-compatible operations. This coexistence diversely impacting challenges multiple ways. Fertilization appeared major issue zone, resulting applied doses. findings could allow actors charge agriculture better focus action. did not take into account outputs studied so productivity impacts have yet been assessed quantitative manner. For future studies, paragons from our analysis typical cases such purpose.

Hydrological Effects of Different Soil Management Practices in Mediterranean Areas

In Mediterranean environment intensive agricultural activities are often practiced in steep slopes, where sometimes climatic, geomorphologic and land use factors (e.g. the high rainfall intensity, the scarce vegetal coverage, especially on the occasion of the early rainfalls, the low organic matter content of soils, etc.) worsen the impacts of soil erosion. In such contexts agriculture may play...

Agroecology: principles and strategies for designing sustainable farming systems

The concept of sustainable agriculture is a relatively recent response to the decline in the quality of the natural resource base associated with modern agriculture (McIsaac and Edwards 1994). Today, the question of agricultural production has evolved from a purely technical one to a more complex one characterized by social, cultural, political and economic dimensions. The concept of sustainabi...

Weeds Management in Organic Farming through Conservation Agriculture Practices

Despite weeds are a serious threat to promotion of organic farming, relatively less attention is given to research on weed management. This article explores a scope of integration of conservation agriculture for weed control and soil protection under organic farming. Limitation in the use of agro-chemicals under OF promotes intensive tillage for weed control. Mostly, tillage leads to depletion ...

Mapping irrigated areas using multi-sensor remote sensing data in a Mediterranean environment

Water managers need map of irrigated areas (defined as the identification of their location and their areal extent) to plan a rational use of water under limited availability and to prevent the unauthorized withdrawals. Many authors have shown that the Earth Observation techniques are an effective tool for mapping irrigated areas worldwide at different spatial scales (global/regional/and local)...
